Electric eels swimming fast inside a tank at the Rainforest exhibit. The large, thick band in the immediate foreground is an electric eel as well. I was told by the assistant there that these creatures have laughably small eyes because they largely communicate by sending out electric signals to each other. They produce two kinds of electric current, a light charge for communication, and a real heavy charge of up to a whopping 600V for self defence or hunting. I recently witnessed a video on YouTube of a crocodile that has caught an electric eel being electrocuted to death! The eel dies in the end as well, but not before killing its captor. Despite its name however, the electric eel is not an eel at all, it's a species of knife fish. Jan/ Feb. 2012.
