Summary

Description
English: Pharaoh's head in terra cotta, a stylized ornament from the Levitan Building at 15-19 W. Main Street, in Madison, Wisconsin. The head topped a column which was copied from an original in the Art Institute of Chicago. Designed by Claude and Starck and constructed in 1928, the Egyptian-themed art deco building on the Capitol Square was demolished in 1974 by the neighboring Affiliated Bank of Madison and was initially replaced by a parking lot and a city-designed parking alcove park. The Risser Justice Center now occupies the location. This remnant was presented by the Affiliated Bank to the art collection of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which has loaned it to the City of Madison for display in the ground floor corridor of the City-County Building.
