30. SUNZAPOTE Licania platypus This fruit is poor in flavor and seldom eaten except when no other fruit is available. The tall, handsome tree grows in profusion in the lowlands of Central America. The elongated young leaves are red or purple, the fruit is very large, with a rough, brownish rind, and the stringy flesh is deep yellow, juicy and sweet. Other names for the sunzapote are sunza, SunganOy and sangre (Costa Rica).
