English: Solvolysis of tert-butyl bromide in methanol gives a carbocation. From this common first step, the intermediate can continue via reaction with methanol—an overall SN1 reaction process—to give methyl tert-butyl ether or via direct loss of a hydrogen ion—an overall E1 reaction process—to give isobutylene.
