English: Dornier Do 17 P (4U + BK), 2nd(F)/123 (2nd Squadron/Strategic Reconnaissance Group (F)/123), established in Würzburg (Lower Franconia, Bavaria) on 1 Nov. 1938 together with the staff and the 1st and 3rd Squadron of the Remote/Strategic Reconnaissance Group (F)/123, which left its peacetime base in Würzburg (Galgenberg/Mönchberg) shortly before the outbreak of war at the end of August 1939 for operational bases on the Polish border (3rd Squadron) and in France. Photo in Belgium or France in May/June 1940. Do 17 P: Reconnaissance aircraft with 2x BMW 132 N (865 hp) radial engines. The aircraft is also being inspected by a corporal from a mountain infantry (Gebirgsjäger-) unit (mountain cap with Edelweiss badge). The oversized bar crosses recognisable here, on the underside and sometimes also on the upper side, were prescribed for all Luftwaffe aircraft after the "Polish campaign" from Nov. 1939, but were only used for a short time. From July 1940 to February 1941, the 2nd(F)/123 was stationed on the British Channel Island of Jersey. There it was converted to Junkers Ju 88 D-1/D-2 and Messerschmitt Bf 110 C-5 reconnaissance aircraft.
