The precursor to the modern day laptop, a ditty box would have housed a sailor’s important documents, organized their writing implements or small tools, and protected personal mementos while at sea. This seemingly simple example is free of any ornament except for the carefully executed box joints along each corner. However the standard issue ditty box was extremely well designed and highly practical. This example incorporates a dropdown writing surface, a removable drawer fitted with small compartments, and also features a larger area for storage at the bottom of the case.
