The present Education Building 35-39 Bridge Street was built by the government architect, George McRae in 1912-1915. The Department of Public Instruction, founded under the Public Instruction Act of 1880 had in 1881 established itself in buildings originally erected on the site in 1815. The second half of the Education Building was begun in 1929, although it was occupied by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Technical Education until 1967.
