The analysts say that despite being based on incomplete data, being Buddhist temples and other institutions far more numerous than those registered in 2006, the density projected on the total population of each province is quite accurate. 各地区佛教寺庙分布密度(2006) 由于各地寺庙数量的统计并不十分完整，因此，由此得出的各地每百万居民拥有的寺庙数量也不十分精确，总的来说，这些数字是应该低于实际水平的。但是，如果我们假设各地的统计误差大体相仿，那么，上图还是能够明显地揭示出各地区寺庙分布密度的相对情况的。统计结果表明，除了西藏、青海这两处藏人聚居区佛教寺庙较多以外，中国大陆汉传佛教最发达的地方集中在福建、浙江和江西这三个东南部省份。这一点与我们田野调查的印象也十分相符。当然，寺庙数量并不能代表佛教资源的全部。而且，每个寺庙的大小不同、社会动员能力也各异。一座大的寺庙可能有常住僧众数百人，而仅由一、两个僧尼住持的小庙也不罕见。但遗憾的是，目前中国的宗教管理部门和佛教协会尚未形成定期公布数据的制度，而国家综合性统计部门所编写的各种年鉴上对于有关宗教的信息也是讳莫如深。目前我们手中仅有部分地方性的数据，无法就全国的相对情况做出判断。不过，我们不妨假设寺庙数与僧尼数具有密切的相关关系。美国社会学家维慈（Holmes Welch）曾根据1930年中国佛教会的调查总结了各地区的僧尼分布密度，法国历史学家高万桑（Vincent Goossaert）也根据清代的资料计算出了在十八世纪三十年代部分省份的佛、道教僧侣的分布密度。我们可以就此比较一下佛教影响最大的一些省份在这几个时期的相应排名。
