Description

Dasygaster nephelistis Hampson, 1905, to MV light, Blackheath, NSW, 23/24 January 2011

This moth seems to be a Dasygaster but there is considerable confusion around Australian Hadeninae in this group. This individual resembles the type of Dasygaster nephelistis and <a href="https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/18410702" rel="nofollow">Hampson's description</a>. The Checklist of Australian Lepidoptera synonymised D. nephelistis with Leucania obumbrata T.P. Lucas, 1894, but made no attempt to assign the species to a genus. <a href="https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/6242805" rel="nofollow">Lucas's description</a> of obumbrata and the type specimen indicate a much plainer moth than the one illustrated here, in particular lacking the fuscous streak down the forewing and the terminal fuscous clouding. As of today (3 February 2011), the <a href="http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/abrs/online-resources/fauna/afd/search/names?search=true&keyword=Leucania+obumbrata" rel="nofollow">Australian Faunal Directory</a> currently treats D. nephelistis as a name for which the correct species is still to be determined.

Once the necessary revisionary work has taken place, it is likely that there will be a more appropriate name for the form illustrated.
