Object history
Jh. in St.Goar herrschten.
English: The arms already appear on the oldest known seal of the city, known since 1331. The upper half shows a lesser lion, derived from the arms of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, who acquired the area in the 13th century. Saint Goar was the capital of the Lower County of Katzenelnbogen. They probably also granted the city rights around 1250-60. The lower half shows a fret charged with fleur-de-lis, similar to other cities in the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen, the are pertaining to the Patrocinium of Virgin Mary of Darmstadt.
