English: The Coat of Arms of Medan during the Dutch colonial times. At that time, Medan was a municipality (gemeente) and the capital of the Residency of East Coast Sumatra (Residentie Oostkust van Sumatra). The municipality was dubbes as Parijs van Sumatra (Paris of Sumatra) and de Koningin Stad van het Eiland Sumatra (the Queen City of the Island of Sumatra). The plant inside the shield is tobacco which was symbolized that Medan was the center of tobacco plantation in Netherlands East Indies.
