Description
The Danish attack on the Swedish harbour, town and fortress of Marstrand took place during July 1719. It was successfully carried out, and resulted in the taking of one large Swedish ship, the frigate Varberg, shown here being towed away from the fire from the fortress, on July 12, 1719. The Varberg is often described in Danish sources as a ship of the line, but the proper Swedish sources have it as a 36 gun frigate, built in 1699. (See Svenska Flottans Historia, Volume II, page 547). The painting used to belong to the Danish Naval Museum (Orlogsmuseet), which has been incorporated in the Danish War Museum (Krigsmuseet), part of the National Museum of Denmark
