Summary

Description

Chicago Portage National Historic Site. In the summer of 1673 members of the Kaskaskia, a tribe of the Illinois Confederation, led French explorers Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette, to the western end of the Chicago Portage. This statue depicts that event. It was designed and executed by Ferdinand Rebechini (1923-2003), a Chicago area artist. It is constructed of Cor-10 steel and was erected on April 25-26, 1990.
