DescriptionCamponotus floridanus worker on plant.jpg
This Florida carpenter ant (Camponotus floridanus) loves her visits to The Sweet Factory! Not a bad job really, hanging out around flowers and buds all day sipping nectar. Or even harvesting honeydew from aphids! This species does not sting but can bite if you are rude or ironic towards them. The workers are all female! The short-lived males are rare and only used by the queen for reproduction. This ant was photographed, appropriately enough, at Sweetbay Natural Area and is on the bud of a native sleepy hibiscus (Hibiscus furcellatus).
