Deutsch: Aus dem Wappenbuch der Gemeinden Südtirols geht hervor, dass der Name Kaltern vermutlich vom lateinischen Wort caldarum, d. h. warmes Bad oder Kessel, herleitet. Letztere Vermutung ist keinesfalls aus der Luft gegriffen. Wenn man das Gebiet von Kaltern allgemein betrachtet, liegt der Ort tatsächlich in einem Talkessel, der lediglich gegen Süden geöffnet ist und in das Unterland überläuft. Aus diesem Grunde ist das Wappen der Marktgemeinde Kaltern seit jeher mit einem Kessel abgebildet. Eine Untersuchung hat ergeben, dass in der Kirche von St. Nikolaus das älteste und vielleicht originellste Wappen von Kaltern abgebildet ist.
