Nederlands: Foto. Net als voor de bekering van de bevolking geldt dat de VOC zich alleen zeer lokaal met onderwijs bezig hield, in feite alleen daar waar ook de Protestantse kerken tot ontwikkeling kwamen. Kerk en school werden als onlosmakelijk gezien en daar waar geen kerk was en wel een school nam de laatste in feite taken van de eerste op zich. Intussen bestonden er op Java duizenden mohammedaanse godsdienstscholen (pesantren), vooral in de Residentie Madioen. Tot ca. 1900 waren de pogingen van het Gouvernement om scholen met een Westerse inslag op te richten niet indrukwekkend. Eigenlijk werd dit pas in de jaren 60 van de 19e eeuw als een taak van de koloniale overheid gezien: in 1867 wordt het Departement van Onderwijs en Eredienst opgericht. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
