English: Officer G.C.E. van Daalen with officers during the military expedition to the Gayo- and Alas region in Aceh, North-Sumatra.
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Nadat in 1903 de Sultan van Atjeh zich overgegeven had, werden de Gajo- en Alaslanden, het nauwelijks bekende en moeilijk toegankelijke achterland van Atjeh, de haard van het verzet tegen het gouvernement. De veldtocht door dit gebied was zelfs naar de maatstaven van die tijd, berucht vanwege het grote aantal doden onder de bevolking dat deze 'pacificatie' kostte. Het socialistische Tweede Kamerlid van Kol vergeleek overste Van Daalen met Alva, de 'wrede landvoogd' uit de Tachtigjarige Oorlog, waarbij Alva er gunstig vanaf kwam. Van Daalen is vergeten. Voor veel Nederlanders van nu symboliseert Van Heutsz de bloederigste kant van het kolonialisme. Sommige Indonesiërs waarderen hem juist als de man die Nederlands-Indië 'afrondde'. (P.
