English: A view of the Brandenburg Gate from what was then East Berlin in 1981. The barrier in the foreground was as near as the East German authorities allowed anybody to get; beyond lay the security zone. Standing beyond the gate itself is the Siegessäule (Berlin Victory Column) at the Großer Stern (Great Star), a square in West Berlin. Also seen through the gate is the lower, thicker section of the Berlin Wall, where it went around the gate. The street along which the viewer sees is Unter den Linden, and beyond the gate, Straße des 17. Juni.
