Summary

Description
English: Bedd Jac Blac Ystumllyn - The Grave of Jack Black Ystumllyn. In the graveyard of 953525 is this simple stone over the grave of John Ystumllyn (as he was baptised).

Known locally, and still remembered, as Jac Blac, John was, it is said, captured in Africa in about 1742 by a member of the Wynne family of Ystumllyn, and brought home there. He was, reputedly, eight years old at the time. During his time at Ystumllyn he learned fluent Welsh and English and was employed as the farm's gardener. He married a local girl, Margaret Griffith from Hendre Mur Trawsfynydd; the couple had seven children. He died in 1786, though his gravestone is dated 1790. The englyn on his stone reads:

Yn India gynna'm ganwyd - a nghamrau Yng Nghymru'm bedyddiwyd; Wele'r fan dan lechan lwyd Du oeraidd y'm daearwyd.

which sums up an exceptional life in minimalist terms:

India (sic) was the land of my birth, but I was baptised in Wales; this spot, marked by a grey slate

is my cold, dark resting place.
