Summary

Description
English: This image shows the steep eastern face of the Banco Bonito flow of the East Fork Member, Valles Rhyolite. The steep face is characteristic of high-aspect flows of silica-rich lava, which in this case mostly cooled to obsidian. The flow was erupted 74,000 years ago, making it the youngest in the Jemez volcanic field, and its obsidian has mostly not yet devitrified, though it is rich in inclusions that make it a poor material for tool manufacture by ancient peoples.
