Manufacturer:- KhPZ Karkov
Production:- 1,884
Main Armament:- 45mm Model 34 gun
The ‘BT’ designation stood for ‘Bystrokhodny tank’ which literally means ‘fast moving tank’ or ‘high-speed tank’. The BT-5 saw action in the Spanish Civil War, in the Far East against the Japanese and also in eastern Poland. In the ‘Winter War’ in Finland their thin armour proved to be their downfall and this was the types last frontline service.
The BT-5 could run with or without tracks. This example is preserved on its wheels ready for road transit and is on display in what is best known as Hall 4 of the Kubinka Tank Museum, although its official title is now Pavilion 4 in Area 2 of the Park Patriot museum.
