Description

Diagram of British Capped Armour-Piercing shell Mk VIIA, for BL 9.2 inch coast defence gun.
The shell is designated for Land service, such as coast defence guns. Shell as illustrated is dated 1913.
Length 33.7 inches, diameter 9.165 inches, weight filled and fuzed 380 lbs. A denoted 4 c.r.h. ballistic cap.
No. 16 Large Base Percussion fuze was fitted.
The shell was painted yellow, with 2 white rings around the head denoting A.P., with a red ring denoting filled, and the plate-cover around the base was painted red when fuzed.

Explosive filling is 33 lbs lyddite including 4 oz picric powder exploder, in an aluminium container varnished on the inside. This was necessary to totally eliminate the possibilty of the lyddite coming into contact with any metal bases, which would lead to unstable picrates forming, risking spontaneous explosion.
Date data correct as at 1 August 1914.
