Description

Tapestry work by Aziz + Cucher, Some People (Cotton and wool jacquard tapestry, 74" x 124", 2014). The image illustrates a major body of work in Aziz + Cucher's later career in the 2010s, when they expanded from digital photographic works into videos and video installations, works on canvas and tapestries. That engaged engagement with geopolitical conflict and history. This work is from their "Tapestries" cycle" (2014–17), a series of collage-like Jacquard loom works that sought to update the medieval European medium of pictorial narrative with their version of contemporary history paintings. It combines diverse imagery, Renaissance compositional strategies and an absurdist theater approach, with shifting perspectives that offer uneasy commentary on modern hypocrisy, human conflict and the complexities and contradictions of global politics. The photographs were publicly exhibited in prominent venues and discussed in major art journals and daily press publications.

Low resolution?

Yes. The image will not affect the commercial value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.

Purpose of use

The image has contextual significance serving an educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key body of work in Aziz + Cucher's later career: their tapestries and works on canvas, which have taken a more political approach, examining issues such as war, inequality and the effects of globalization. Less centered on the body and technology than their earlier series, this work is characterized by allegory, an expanded range of medium, a layered visual method that also draws upon classical history painting pictorialism and folk-inspired imagery, and a tragicomic, absurdist tone. Because the article is about artists and their work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this later body of work and new medium, which brought Aziz + Cucher new recognition through exhibitions in major venues, coverage by major critics and publications, and museum commissions. Aziz + Cucher's work of this type and this series, as well as this specific work, are discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Aziz + Cucher, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image use is minimal in that it conveys important information that a full artwork image at a limited fair-use size cannot due to the uniquely hyper-detailed nature of the work. By providing a close-up of the artist's style and imagery, it is significantly more informative for a viewer. It is also a further protection (along with the low resolution) against affecting commercial value.
