Deutsch: August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (1761-1819) Ölgemälde von J. C. Heinsius, Landesbibliothelk Weimar.Sein Charakter war Goethe nicht minder unsympathisch, was ihn als Theaterleiter nicht hinderte, während der sechsundzwanzig Jahre seiner Theaterleitung fast ein Sechstel aller Theaterabende mit Kotzebues Stücken zu besetzen. Kotzebues Versuche Goethe und Schiller zu entzweien durch eine betonte Schillerfeier (1802) wurden vereitelt. In Verbindung mit G.H.Merkel gab Kotzebue 1803-1806 die Zeitschrift "Der Freimütige" heraus, die goethefeindlich wirkte. 1819 wurde Kotzebue von dem Studenten Sand, der übrigens Goethe im November 1817 besuchte, ermordet.
