File:Armenian Presidential Elections 2008 Protest Day 11 - 111AM Shahumyan Square - Army soldiers arrive in several buses.jpg

Summary

Description The 11th day of Armenian presidential election protests. At 7:30 am, the peaceful "camp-in" protest at Liberty Square in Yerevan was violently ended by Armenian special forces which used truncheons and electric shock devices to disperse the crowd of around 1,000. At 12:30 pm, a new crowd marches to the French Embassy in a spontaneous demonstration, barricade themselves using abandoned police buses, and grow in number to around 150,000.

By 12 am, the bulk of the approximately 2,000 demonstrators left in the area are at Miasnikyan Square in front of the French Embassy, while only tens of people are at the site of the looting of a grocery store near the intersection of Mashdots Ave and G. Lusavorich Street (a quarter mile northwest of the location of this camera). For several hours police allow looting to continue in the area of Mashdots Ave and G. Lusavorich for several hours, as government TV crews film tens of people looting the grocery store. The opposition has alleged that the tens of looters were led by government provocateurs in order to display violence on the streets which would be used to justify the state of emergency.

In this picture (1:11 AM) buses of army soldiers join the riot police at Shahumyan Square. The army would later fire live bullets, some of them with tracer rounds, into the crowd, injuring hundreds and killing dozens of peaceful protesters who were armed only with long metal rods and some Molotov cocktails for self-defense.
