This vase which bears the image of two boats with cabins,oars and sails is thought to be from the Naqada II period. The pottery of this era was mostly painted in dark red with pictures of animals, people and ships, as well as geometric symbols. Images of boats transporting human figures are a common decoration in vessels of this period and have been interpreted as images of deities or burial scenes. Naqada is a district and town north of Luxor on the west bank of the Nile in southern Egypt.The vase is thought to date from circa 3500-3300 BC. |
