DescriptionAltar of the Scribes 03 (51221770574).jpg
AD 25-50.
Marble.
From Museo Nazionale Romano, Rome.
This finely carved tombstone reflects social mobility among Roman commoners and freedmen (former slaves). It was dedicated by Quintus Fulvius Eunus to his sons Faustus and Priscus, who died in their twenties. Both men rose to become clerks who worked as scribes for senatorial officials in Rome's public administration. While the officials changed annually, clerks provided expertise and continuity. Many went on to hold respected positions. The upper scene depicts a magistrate surrounded by scribes and support staff. Below, people hand over documents to be processed.
