DescriptionAlberta 1952 license plate - Number 37E37.jpg
In 1952 Alberta had some major plate changes. First beaded reflectorized plates appeared for the first time in Alberta and also was Canada's first general issue reflectorized plate. Alberta would not adopt reflective plates again until 1967.
Second the plates introduced a letter into the serial number to keep the serial at five digits. Only this issue which was tabbed in 1953 did Alberta ever use letters in between the numbers. At first the letter was in the middle position then later on in the second position but of a smaller size than the number. The letters "I" and "O" were used also in the middle position but were smaller to distinguish them from the numbers "1" and "0".
Thirdly this was Alberta's first experiment in a multiyear plate and in 1953 Alberta would issue it's first plate tab license plate to extend it's use. Alberta had used a multiyear plate before with a windshield sticker in 1944.
Finally Alberta decided to go back to dating the plate with the year of issue other than the previously used year of expiry. When Alberta did this they had two plates dated 52, this one and the EX-31-3-52 plate which is actually a 1951. This really confuses the car collectors who have to decide which 52 dated plate to put on their 1952 automobile.
