Purpose of use

The image represents the Adipose, the antagonists of the relevant story ("Partners in Crime"). Specifically, the image provides the following:

  • Their appearances as small white aliens, in a way that text can not describe. An uninvolved editor commented that a proposed text-only alternative made him "[think] more along the lines of small balls, like beads of mercury", totally disimilar to their actual appearance.
  • The creation of Adipose is discussed, as a "cute" monster, a break from Doctor Who's "scary" monsters
  • The image is an example of the crowd replication technology used by the post-production team under the supervision of Oscar winner Stephen Regelous. Again, this is an entirely new concept to Doctor Who, which previously dealt with small groups.
