English Heritage have stated that this plaque is a fake, and advise that they have on several occasions asked the building's owners to remove it. In his time in London, there is no evidence that Canaletto lived or worked anywhere other than at 41 Beak Street in Soho. The location of Howley Place was open farmland at the time Canaletto lived in London. Howley Place was not laid out until the 1840s.
A genuine English Heritage plaque was erected in 1988 at 10 Howley Place commemorating the Indian patriot and philosopher Lokamanya Tilak who lived there 1918-19. This plaque is in a much less prominent location.
