English: The Third Battle of Winchester occurred on September 19, 1863, as part of the American Civil War. In this battle, George Crook's Army of West Virginia attacked Jubal Early's left flank which, in combination with cavalry, was a turning point in the battle.

Payne's position has also been noted per the Library of Congress Map titled "Battle field of Winchester, Va. (Opequon) [September 19, 1864]".
