Summary

Description
English: A graph depicting the mass account-breaking campaign on Wikimedia between July 23, 2018 and March 7, 2019. The colors of the graph have been altered from the current coloring scheme on the source website. This account-breaking cyberattack was the largest one recorded in the history of Wikimedia, greatly surpassing the scale and the duration of a previous cyberattack in May 2018. Unlike the previous cyberattack in May 2018, which targeted most of the active user accounts, this hacking campaign focused primarily on administrator accounts. This mass-hacking campaign came in 3 waves. During the first wave, from July 23 to September 17, during the peak of the attacks, there were an average of 1,300,000 to 2,664,000 cyberattacks per day. During the second wave, from September 19 to October 1, there were an average of 579,000 cyberattacks per day. During the third wave, from October 4, 2018 to March 7, 2019 (the longest phase of the cyberattack campaign), there were an average of 1,726,000 cyberattacks per day. This cyberattack may have affected millions of accounts, but given the overwhelming focus on administrator accounts, it is much more likely that most of the administrator accounts targeted experienced thousands to millions of account-breaking attacks.
