Summary

Description
English: Rowing competitions are held around the islands in the Faroe Islands each summer, starting in Klaksvík in the end of May or beginning of June and ending with the national holiday Ólavsøka in Tórshavn on 28 July (Ólavsøkuaftan). This photo was taken at Jóansøka, which is the local festival in Suðuroy, it is held every second year in Vágur and every second year in Tvøroyri. This is in Vágur on 26 June 2010. Jóansøka is mostly held in the last weekend of June. The boats are traditional wooden Faroese rowboats. There can be 6, 8 or 10 rowers in the categories 5-mannafør boys, 5-mannafør girls, 5-mannafør women, 6-mannafør women, 6-mannafør men, 8-mannafør men, 10-mannafør men. Children are also rowing in their own competitions; they row in the smallest boats the so-called 5-mannafør (6 persons rowing and one steering). Sometimes there are also competitions for old-boys and old-girls. In the summer of 2010 there were seven village festivals with FM rowing competitions. Information about these festivals is to find on the Faroe Islands Rowing Association's website: http://www.rsf.fo/Stevnur.html
