Jan Pieter Minckelers developed the first form of gas lighting in 1783. His statue on the central Markt square in his hometown features an eternal flame. The pedestal has two bronze plaquettes explaining his discoveries east and west. On the right is the Sint Matthijskerk in the Boschstraat. map.
