English: A row house located at 1921 17th Street, N.W., (at the intersection of 17th and Willard Streets, N.W.) in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
Built around 1893, the brick, Italianate-style home is designated as a contributing property to the Strivers' Section Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Previous occupants have included Frederick Vernon Coville (and his wife, Elizabeth Harwood Boyton Coville), chief botanist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, author of 170 scientific works, helped establish the U.S. National Herbarium, and supervised the establishment of the United States National Arboretum; and Vernon Orlando Bailey, a pioneering naturalist and mammalogist, the first field agent of the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammology, author of 244 scientific works, and husband of Florence Augusta Merriam Bailey. |
