Summary

Description
English: This photo, taken in 2010, looks ENE at the ruins of the second fire control structure to be built at Ft. Andrews. This was a dual set of observation stations and plotting rooms for the 12-inch mortars of Batteries Whitman and Cushing, respectively.Just like the East Side station for Bty McCook pictured at left, the southerly half of this station, pictured here, had a depression position finder (DPF) mounted on a large concrete column, surrounded by a wood and plaster structure. The structure has now collapsed in on itself, crushed by falling trees, but the large instrument column is still visible, at the center of the image, behind the bright green brush. The mounting bolts that used to hold the DPF are also visible. The structure sits in a 15-ft. deep pit that was originally dug to conceal it, and probably only the instrument viewing windows protruded over the brow of the excavation. These are apparently the only remains of their type in the harbor defenses of Boston to have survived.
