Summary

An 1819 evening dress from Ackermann's Repository, worn by a harp-playing young lady
Artist
unknown work-for-hire early nineteenth-century engraver
Title
An 1819 evening dress from Ackermann's Repository, worn by a harp-playing young lady
Description
Shows certain tendencies of the incipient transition away from the Empire/Regency fashion aesthetic, such as a more conical silhouette, and heavy ornamentation applied horizontally around the dress near the hem. However, the waistline is still very high, and there are not so many layers of petticoats that the gown is prevented from flexibly accommodating the body posture.
