Trips like these are all planned about getting in the passenger lines and not so much what the train is formed of. With no DMUs in the area and passenger services in the hands of state operator CFR Călători meant a 100% guarantee on this line. This is the end of the 85 km passenger line from Bacău to Bicaz. Most passenger services go only as far as the largest town Piatra Neamț where I stayed the previous evening. Just two trains a day go through to Bicaz, and there was enough daylight to be able to do the morning train, R5471, 04:08 Bacău to Bicaz.
