Summary

Description

10-car class 442 unit with 442.417 (named "Woking Homes") leading with its next working scheduled as 1A53, 18:49 Brighton to London Victoria.

Built in 1988 in readiness for the extension of third rail electrification from Bournemouth to Weymouth. 24 of these 5-car sets classified 5WES and branded Wessex Electrics. However they were soon nicknamed Plastic Pigs due to the large amount of plastic used for internal fittings. These new sets replaced the well liked 4REP and TC formations that worked the route for the previous 20 or so years. These air condition trains took charge of most services on the London Waterloo to Weymouth line as well as regular outings on the Portsmouth line.

In 2007 South West Trains had withdrawn the entire fleet as they were replaced with Siemens built class 444s and 450s which in addition replaced the slam door fleet. After a brief period in storage, Southern acquired the fleet as part of the Gatwick Express route extension. As such they are stale power on the Brighton mainline as seen on 3 September 2013.
