Description Maddalena, Cyrenaica, North Africa. 30 November 1941. Wing Commander (Wg Cdr) Peter 'Pete' Jeffrey DSO DFC of the RAAF with Sergeant (Sgt) A. Cameron of No. 3 Squadron RAAF whom he picked up in his Curtiss P40 Tomahawk aircraft in enemy territory after the Sergeant's aircraft had crashed. Sgt Cameron was shot down after a hectic dog-fight but managed to crash-land unhurt. He was seen by Wg Cdr Jeffrey who landed and abandoning his parachute, stowed Sgt Cameron (easily the biggest man in the squadron) into the cockpit with him and returned to base. For his action, Wg Cdr Jeffrey was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
