Summary

Description
English: The Mahakaleshvar 1 is a late 11th-century Shiva temple in Un village, about 10 miles west of Khargone city. It is located to the north of Chaubara Dera 1, and has a similar floor plan. Given Mahakaleshwar's sophistication, it was likely built in the decades immediately after Chaubara Dera 1 was complete.

The Mahakaleshvara temple 1 faces east, stands on a jagati (platform), has a mandapa and sikhara – both torn and damaged. This damage exposed some of the internal features of how major Hindu temples were built. In the case of Mahakaleshvara temple, the architect included two trabeate arches between the mandapa and the sanctum – a feature also found in major temples of Odisha and Bihar from the same century.

This temple is notable for its mandapa, which likely was the largest mandapa among the numerous temples of Un. The notable artwork here includes reliefs from all major traditions of Hinduism – Brahma, Vishnu, Chamunda, Tripuri, several forms of dancing Shiva, as well as the Nataraja on the lalatabimba.
