Image title | ERT health managers Emelda and Gatmai on their way to another supervision visit in Nyal Payam, Unity State on 14 September 2022.
In Nyal Payam, situated in Panyijiar County in the far south of Unity State, Medair’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) carried out a health intervention from August to October 2022. The closure of several local Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) and continual flooding since 2020 limiting accessibility to safe drinking water and healthcare led to increased mortality and morbidity. Targeting malaria patients of all age groups and pneumonia and diarrhoea patients under five, the ERT conducted immediate community-based assistance in this low-resource area by training, supplying and supporting community health workers to diagnose and treat patients in their villages. This strategy called Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM) is one of the most efficient and affordable ways to respond to health emergencies in hard to reach and undersupplied areas.
The health intervention in Nyal Payam was funded by aid from the European Union (ECHO).
Based in Juba, the ERT works throughout South Sudan wherever there is mass displacement, disease outbreak, high rates of malnutrition, natural disasters, or where there is a gap in humanitarian services. This is a multisectoral team capable of mobilizing mass vaccination campaigns, responding to outbreaks of diseases, treating high rates of malnutrition, and distributing emergency household supplies and cash and voucher assistance. Where needed it drills and repairs boreholes and builds sanitation facilities, and trains people on maintaining water services. The ERT is highly flexible and equipped to focus on initial, emergency needs. Typical interventions last no longer than three months. |
