Description"Turnwake, with figures at base of flagpole" - is Tynwald Hill, Isle of Man (26966343094).jpg
The Turnwake it says! As if that is enough in itself to describe and locate a circular mound with a flagpole in its centre. Well, I must admit that I never heard of it before nor did I ever see an image of it before so I will await with bated breath to discover what have I been missing!
Signed, A Cranky, (Morning Mary)
[/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac] quite quickly identified this as the mound of Tynwald Hill at St Johns, the Isle of Man. Similar to Dublin's "Thingmount" (that we'd discussed in recent months), the hill's mound was an ancient Norse/Viking meeting place (part parliament, part court) - and the island's legislature still sits ceremonially at the spot annually in early July.
