A Russian milk jar

A milk jar is a hand built or wheel thrown earthenware vessel for storing milk. In Lithuanian, it is called a puodynė. In Samogitian, it is also called a pienpuodis. Milk jars usually hold 3–6 litres.

Hand built milk jars that were burnt black were produced in the 19th century and glazed milk jars since the early 20th century. The milk jars from Central and North Lithuania had a distinct neck and shoulder similar to a pitcher, those from Dzūkija and places in East Aukštaitija, were tall and narrow, those from Žemaitia had a short neck and a more rounded body, and those from Sūduva had a neck that comprised about a third of the jar and pronounced shoulders.[1]
