Leinster Chess Leagues

The Leinster Leagues are chess team competitions run by the Leinster Chess Union [1][2][3] in Leinster, Ireland.

League structure edit

The leagues include the following divisions which may be divided into sections e.g. North, South, Central in some years, depending on the number of teams participating. The number of divisions varies for the same reason. In the 2023/24 season there were three sections in the Bodley Cup but no O'Sullivan Cup divisions. At the end of each season there is promotion and relegation of two or more teams between divisions, depending on the number of sections in the divisions concerned. The Leinster Leagues are governed by the "LCU League Rules".[4] The LCU is affiliated to the Irish Chess Union,[5][not specific enough to verify] players have to be registered with the ICU and all matches are rated by the ICU.

The Leinster Leagues consist of:

Knockout cups edit

The leagues normally start in late September and continue until early May. After this clubs may put forward teams for three knockout competitions, from among players who played in the leagues. Recently there have been group stages followed by a knockout phase with semi-finals and a final in each competition.

  • Branagan Cup[7] - for players from divisions 1 and 2
  • Killane Shield - for players who played in divisions 3 and below
  • William Brennan Trophy - for players rated below 1500
