Tharupathi Munasinghe is a Sri Lankan composer, music director, and academic. He has worked on music for cinema, stage plays, and television series, with notable compositions including 'Saho' (2023), 'Wala Patala' (2007), 'Dedunu Wessa' (2005), 'Amawaka (Penumbra),' and 'Machan' (2006). His work extends to television series like 'Angali Salakuna' and the stage play 'Maha Supina.' Munasinghe has received awards for his contributions to music and sound design.
He holds a PhD and his academic research focuses on sound ethnography, sound studies, and ethnomusicology.
Early years
editTharupathi Munasinghe's musical education was influenced by his father, Austin Munasinghe, a Sri Lankan music composer, and his mother, Achirawathie Yalagama, a music teacher. He participated in his father's orchestra and took part in music competitions. In 1996, he joined Professor Sarachchandra's theater group, where he worked as a chorus member and music conductor for productions such as 'Maname,' 'Sinhabahu,' 'Mahasara,' and 'Rathnawalee.'
He won the Best Music Award for his work on the play 'Arundathi' at the State Drama Festival in 2000 and was also recognized at the Youth Theatre Festival in 1999.
Career
editTharupathi Munasinghe has worked in music composition and direction across theater, cinema, and television. His film compositions include 'Wala Patala,' 'Machan,' and 'Sikuru Hathe,' and he has contributed to television series such as 'Sakisanda Eliyas,' 'Sabanda Pubilis,' 'Depath Nai,' and 'Isuru Yogaya.' He has also worked on sound design for cinema and theater.
He served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya and completed his PhD at Deakin University in Australia. His doctoral research focused on the Sri Lankan low-country drum and its use in various performance contexts.
His research includes studies in music, sound design, and ethnomusicology. Notable areas of his research are low-country drumming in Sri Lanka, sound design in cinema, and the role of music among Sri Lankan migrants in Melbourne.
