Dom Harvey (born 3 February 1973)[1][2] is a New Zealand podcaster and former radio host. Known to be a 'shock jock', Harvey started his radio career on the morning breakfast show which aired on The Edge from 2001 until 2021.[3][4] After leaving The Edge, Harvey began his own podcast, The Dom Harvey Podcast.[5]

Early life edit

Harvey was born in Levin, New Zealand. He later grew up in Palmerston North.[5][6]

Career edit

Radio edit

Harvey began his radio career with joining the now-defunct radio station 2XS FM.[7] After this, Harvey joined the morning team on The Edge with co-hosts, Mike Puru and Jay-Jay Feeney.[8]

In 2021, Harvey left The Edge amid a harassment report being published by QC Marie Dew on culture at The Edge's parent company MediaWorks.[9][10][11]

Podcast edit

Harvey started his own podcast, The Dom Harvey Podcast.[5] Here he would talk with prominent New Zealanders.[12] The podcast was originally titled Runners Only! but was later changed.[13]

Works edit

In 2012 Harvey published his first book Bucket List of an Idiot.[14] This book was followed by Childhood of an Idiot which was released in 2014.[15] In 2017 he released a book about his love for running in his book Running: A Love Story.[16]

Awards edit

Harvey is a recipient for the Sir Paul Holmes Award for NZ Broadcaster of the Year. In 2022 Harvey won bronze at the 2022 NZ Podcast Awards.[17]

Controversies edit

Brief radio suspension edit

In 2010 Harvey was suspended for 24 hours without pay after airing an explicit jingle about former TVNZ presenter and radio host Alison Mau on The Edge radio station. The jingle made references to her partner, Karleen Edmonds. The jingle was later removed from the Station’s website and YouTube.[18][19][20]

Uncle Bully tweet edit

During the 2013 series of New Zealand's X Factor, Harvey received backlash over a tweet that he posted after contestant Grace Ikanasio didn't make it to the next round. The tweet wrote, Poor Gracie! First molested in her own bed by uncle bully. And now kicked out of #xfactornz. The tweet was a reference to the New Zealand film Once Were Warriors.[21] Harvey later apologised for the tweet.

Accidental sending of genitals photo edit

In 2013 Harvey accidentally sent a photo of his genitals to New Zealand Paralympic Sophie Pascoe. The photo was intended for a producer at The Edge who shared the same first name.[22] At the time, Harvey's employer Mediaworks condemned the incident and didn't take further action. Though Pascoe found the accident humorous, Harvey later apologised.[23][24][25]

Dancing With the Stars tweet edit

Harvey received further backlash over a tweet that he posted in 2015 during the final of New Zealand's Dancing With the Stars. The tweet was a screen shot from the show, showing Chrystal Chenery's crotch with the text Chrystal just showing Art what he missed out on by Harvey. He later apologised for sharing the tweet.[26][27][28]

Personal life edit

Harvey was married to radio co-host Jay-Jay Feeney from 2004 until 2017.[29][30]In 2018 Harvey revealed that he had a new partner but kept her name anonymous.[31][32] In 2022 Harvey shared publicly that he was in a new relationship with Wellington art student Ash Males who is 20 years his junior.[33][34][35]

Harvey has a strong interest in running and has completed in several marathons around the world.[36] Harvey was an ambassador for the World Masters Games in 2017 that was held in Auckland, New Zealand.[37] In 2018 Harvey raised over $260,000 (NZD) that went to life-saving treatment for a girl with Neuroblastoma.[38]
