The school is well known for its leadership program, Dragonfire, and its grade 8 counterpart, Dragonflame. The school is also known for its pre-advanced placement program in all grades. The school's Provincial Achievement Test results have consistently placed above the provincial average. Dan Knott School is named after former Edmonton mayor Dan Knott. In 2017 the Edmonton Public School Board promised to debate changing the school's name due to Dan Knott's association with the Alberta branch of the KKK.[2] Since then they have begun looking for a new name after a petition was launched by a community member.[3]

In early September 2020, the “... trustees voted unanimously in favour of the motion which recommended the school division seek input from the community before moving ahead to rename the two schools. The motion was put forward after Millwoods community member, Aimee Dorsey started a petition to rename the school because of his affiliation with and support of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in Edmonton during his time as mayor.”[4]
