::Many of the cherry trees that people admire in streets and parks are cultivated varieties. And many of these are based on the Japanese Oshima cherry. It is only in recent years that China and South Korea have shown an interest in developing cherry varieties, and historically it is Japan that has developed by far the largest number of cherry varieties. It was only after the Second World War that cherry trees became increasingly popular in China and Korea, and large numbers of the general public began to go to see the cherry blossoms.
