Sellakili was the only LTTE cadre to be killed in an ambush in Thirunelveli, Jaffna on 23rd July 1983 that killed 13 Sri Lanka Armed soldiers which triggered the start of the Sri Lankan Civil war. The ambush sparked the Black July riots across the country. Sellakili was the leader of the group that carried out the attack
